August 20, 2017

Dear Families of MJE Students,

As I’m sure you may be aware, on Monday, August 21, 2017 the moon will pass between the earth and the sun for the first coast-to-coast total solar eclipse since 1918.  Millions of Americans in 12 states will be able to watch this solar spectacle that will turn day into night for a couple of minutes.  The natural phenomenon will be visible in New Orleans on Monday, starting at 11:58 a.mWhile you can see the eclipse anywhere the sky is visible.

Mahalia Jackson Elementary is committed to the safety of the students, employees, and families we serve.  Therefore, we have decided not to host outside activities at any of our schools on Monday, August 21, 2017, between the hours of 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.  We will not physically watch the Solar Eclipse at school, but will watch it live from NASA Live Stream website at 12:00p.m. in the auditorium.

Pre K and K students will remain in class with their window blinds down until the Eclipse passes.

If you wish to check your child ouof school to view the Eclipse, we ask that you do so by 10:30a.m.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact the school at 504. 359.6950.

Check out this NASA Live Stream
